This paper will attempt to explain dynamic regional geography using the Numazu-Mishima region in Shizuoka prefecture as a case study. Dynamic regional geography differs from traditional static regional geography, which uses standardized descriptions of geology, topography, climate, history, population, agriculture, industry, communications and culture, etc., in that it describes the elements of the present geographical characteristics in the region in order from the highest dimension to the lowest dimension. The dynamic regional geography of the Numazu-Mishima region can be described according to the regional structure shown in Figure 2. In the Numazu-Mishima region can be found the three important geographical elements: an area of large water resources, an entrance to tourism and a nodal region. Near the large water resources are located water oriented industries such as the spinning of hemp thread, the production of chemical fibers (by the Toray Co.) and the production of dairy products (by the Morinaga Co.) and so on. Characters of its position as an entrance to tourism in central and western Izu Peninsula are its traffic facilities, various tourism resources and its tourist attractions such as hot spring resorts, picnic areas, strawberry and orange picking, golf courses, fishing and marine sports, etc. Its position as a nodal region in the eastern part of Shizuoka prefecture is established by the concentration of various urban functions.
