Abstract

Most studies on the effects of attentional focusing have used situations involving bleeding such as accidents, surgeries, and stabbings as emotional stimuli. In these circumstances, participants may attend to the blood rather than to the detailed characteristics of the source of emotion. We examined the hypothesis that blood attracts particular attention because of its role in communicating a threat or a call for help and protection. We asked 16 participants to engage in a visual search task in which they viewed 3×3 matrices containing images of either one blood-stained shirt among shirts with a red rose-shaped ribbon or one shirt with a red rose-shaped ribbon among blood-stained shirts and to select the discrepant image. Participants committed fewer errors when presented with a blood-stained shirt against a background of shirts with red rose-shaped ribbons than under the reverse condition. This result indicates that the image of blood captures human attention.
