Abstract

<p>This study discusses the main error tendencies in particle usage and the use of ga and wo in essays written by Sinhalese-speaking Japanese learners. Particular attention in the analysis of error factors is given to ga, which has received little attention in previous studies. The essays were divided into three groups using a short test. The subsequent analysis indicated that the error rate of ga in the intermediate-level group was highest. Furthermore, the error rate of wo was low among all three groups, and the object was being used consistently. The majority of errors with ni and de involved switching these two particles. In all three groups, among the errors of ga particle usage, "×ga→○wo" (ga is wrong, wo is correct) errors accounted for around 80%, most of which involved unpaired transitive verbs. The primary factor for such errors seems to be the influence of Sinhalese case markers. This results in learners being unable to distinguish between ga and wo, increasing the probability of selecting ga for the object of a low-volition transitive verb. The error "×ga→○wo" is a serious problem in the use of Japanese particles. Therefore, it is necessary for teachers to take special care to distinguish the usage of ga and wo.</p>
