The first confirmed dengue outbreak in nearly 70 years in Japan was reported in 2014 with 162 autochthonous dengue cases. The largest number of confirmed cases were reported in August and continued to be reported through October. Majority were associated with Yoyogi Park, a forested park popular with international and local visitors and an ideal site for the mosquito vector, Aedes albopictus. In addition to health education to prevent mosquito bites, vector control before and during the season when mosquitoes are active is crucial for preventing and controlling dengue virus infection over the coming seasons.
