Activated carbon (BAC) was oxidized by three different oxidation methods: H2SO4/HNO3 (NAOx), H2SO4/KMnO4 (HMOx), and H2SO4/H2O2 (PSOx), for the purpose of introducing acidic functional groups to enhance Pb(II) adsorption from aqueous solutions. The effects of oxidation time and temperature on the activated carbons Pb(II) adsorption capacities were investigated to optimize the process conditions. The maximum adsorption amounts followed the order of NAOx>HMOx>PSOx. The Pb(II) adsorption principally progressed by an ion exchange mechanism with protons of the acidic functional groups for NAOx, but some other adsorption mechanisms also seem to be working for a part of HMOx and PSOx samples.
