This study was undertaken whether or not swimming is a precipitating factor for epileptic seizures, and how this type of exercise affects the basic rythms and seizure discharges of EEG in epileptic children.
The subjects in this study were 30 epileptic children of normal intelligence (16 males and 14 females) who were seizure-free for more than a year. They ranged in age from 7 to 12 years. The seizure types were: tonic-clonic seizures in 14 children, absence seizures in 4, and partial seizures in 12. EEG records of thecentral and occipital areas were taken using a 4-channel telemetry system in an indoor pool at a water temperature of 30-31°C and a room temperature of 31-32°C
Recording of EEG was carried out before, during and after the two swimming and was performed to hyperventilate twice. The mean number of spike discharges was 9.2% at rest, 10.5% at rest following the 1st hyperventilation, 4.1% during the 1st swimming, 2.4% during the 2nd swimming and 9.4% at rest following the 2nd hyperventilation, respectively. It was clear that spike discharges in EEG decreased during swimming (t< 0.01). Statiscally, there was no significant difference between the numbers of spike discharges before and after the swimming.
Also, no marked changes in the EEG were found in the basic rythms before and after the swimming.
These results suggest that swimming does not make the epileptic discharges worse. We conclude that swimming is not a risk factor for epileptic children, if patients are well controlled with anticonvulsants and have normal intelligence.
