O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-D-glucopyranose (hereinafter designated as 4'GL) are produced from lactose by Cryptococcus laurentii. Some isolates from human intestine, in particular, Bifidobacterium spp. and the Bacteroides fragilis group were able to utilize 4'GL. Utilization of 4'GL by Bifidobacterium spp. was superior to that of lactulose. The effect of 4'GL intake on the fecal microflora was studied in healthy human volunteers. A significant increase of Bifidobacterium spp.(p<0.01) was observe during the 4'GL intake, whereas Bacteroidaceae was decreased during intake. The fecal pH values during feeding were lower than those before and after the intake.
