The hypocholesterolemic activity of Chlorella fractions has been investigated in male Wistar rats fed on a high cholesterol diet containing 1% cholesterol and 0.25% cholic acid for a week. Dried Chlorella powder (CP) was fractionated for lipid fraction (CL), water soluble fraction (CW) and protease resistant fraction (CF). The CL fraction was refractionated for simple lipid (CL-A) and compound lipid (CL-B) by silica gel column chromatography. These fractions were added to a cholesterol enriched diet. The increase of the levels of total cholesterol, β-lipoprotein cholesterol and phospholipid in serum was markedly inhibited by administrption of CL (0.5-1.0% in diet) and CL-B (0.5% in diet) fractions. On the other hand, fractions of CL-A, CW and CF (0.2-1.0% in diet) did not reduce the levels of serum lipids in rats.
