Aging may be more the result of an interaction among many specific characteristics within an individual than of a single process. Biological or functional age based on the assessment of various physiological factors measured in the resting state has been proposed as an index of health or aging status. We have recently developed an equation, consisting of 11 predictor variables measured during exercise as well as at rest, for estimating the so-called “vital age” (VA) of Japanese men and women, after age-standardized norms for many variables have been statistically defined (Tanaka et al., 1990). In the present study, the effects of exercise, hypertension and obesity on VA, suspected of being related to CHD, were investigated. One hundred and thirty-two Japanese women between the ages of 30 and 68 years served as subjects. The subjects were allocated into 8 groups. It was demonstrated that in the exercise group mean VA (43.5±7.6yr) was significantly lower than the mean chronological age (CA; 52.2±5.9yr). Significantly high VAs were demonstrated in the groups of CHD (60.5±11.4yr, CA= 53.1±8.6yr), hypertension (63.4±7.1yr, CA=55.7±7.3yr) and obesity (57.8±7.5yr, CA=53.6±8.2yr), while the VAs in the hypertensive (53.7±6.8yr) or obese (49.8±5.3yr) subjects who had been extensively training tended to approximate their CAs (52.6±7.5yr and 51.2±6.8yr respectively) and were similar to the VAs (48.7±10.2yr, CA=50.5±9.8yr) of normal individuals without any exercise habit. Additionally, it was shown that the VA of patients can be profoundly lowered by our supervised aerobic conditioning program (2d/wk, 90min/d, 8 months) and/or self-controlled physical training. Therefore, we conclude that VA could be a valid index of health and/or aging status.
