Skin hygroscopicity and water-holding capacity after topical applications of various alcoholic disinfectant solutions onto the flexor surface of the forearms were measured by using the skin hygrometer (Skicon-200, IBS Co.). Five solutions were tested: a) 80v/v% ethanol, b) 0.5w/v% chlorhexidine/ethanol, c) 0.2w/v% benzalkonium chloride/ethanol, d) 0.5w/v% povidone iodide/ethanol, and e) 0.2w/v% chlorhexidine/ethanol. Skin hygroscopicities were not significantly different among the solutions, but skin water-holding capacities varied considerably with each solutions, respectively. Two solutions (c and e) containing certain emollients gave higher water-holding capacities than other solutions, indicating that addition of emollients can be effective to protect against skin dryness after applications of the alcoholic hand disinfectant.
