Between January 1992 and December 1993, 10 patients were diagnosed as having anaphylactoid purpura at our department, and 5 of them developed purpuric nephritis as a complication.<BR>We compared patients' background, the state of eruption, laboratory findings, and skin biopsy findings between the group with nephritis and that without nephritis, and evaluated risk factors of the development of nephritis. The findings associated with the development of nephritis were extensive persisting eruption, fever, abdominal pain, joint pain, strongly positive fecal occult blood, a high IgA level, decreased blood coagulation factor XIII, and marked cell infiltration and nuclear destruction in skin biopsy specimens. Some of our findings were consistent but others were inconsistent with previous reports.
