Abstract

Spontaneous mediastinal emphysema with cervical emphysema is relatively rare. A 15-year-old patient with a sore throat admitted for pharyngeal pain was found in neck and chest X-ray and CT to have intramediastinal and cervical air. Laboratory data, fluoroscopy of the esophagus, and bronchoscopic examination were negative. The patient had no underlying disease and was diagnosed with spontaneous mediastinal emphysema. Bed rest and antibiotics cured emphysema within ten days, after which no recurrence was seen.
