The Historia Brittonumis apparently one of the most important of the narrative sources for early mediaeval British history but recent work has shown that its historical value is no more soundly based that the ascription ofthe text's authorship to one Nennius. Rather, its value is as a literary monument. It contains important material on the early development of the Arthurian legend, on British pseudo-history, on the development of Welsh literatureand of Latin literature in Wales, notably saints' lives. Above all, it is a vital witness to Welsh cultural history and to Anglo-Welsh relationships in the ninth century. It was a highly influential and widely read book in the middle ages, and influenced much later historical writing, as well as the pseudo-histories of Geoffrey of Monmouth and his successors.
