The stability of polymers under a variety of conditions, methods of determining such stability quantitatively, and methods of improving such stability, are of utmost importance for successful applications of these materials. In order to improve all aspects of the stability of polymers, a fundamental understanding of degradation processes is essential. This volume presents a collection of detailed reviews of various areas in the field of polymer science. It is the second such volume; the first appeared in 1983 and was highly commended: ``There is no doubt that the editor's hope that `this series of volumes will fill a need for research workers in industry and universities' will be fulfilled, and that this particular volume will find an honourable place among the books in the general field...''
