内容説明

Volume VI of Cancer Incidence in Five Continents provides compilations of cancer incidence from 142 registries covering 170 populations in 46 countries, for the years 1983-87. Age-specific, age-standardized, truncated and cumulative incidence rates are given for all malignant categories of cancer by sex and for each population. The raw data are contributed by population-based registries throughout the world, and are subjected to a series of validity and quality control tests before being processed in a standard manner. This series of publications presents data on cancer incidence from different parts of the world which can be used with confidence, and every effort is made to ensure that the rates are truly comparable from one area and ethnic group to another. To ensure that this is so, the data are subjected to a detailed editorial review once they have been checked and processed, and data which appear unreliable are not published in this series. The book includes commentary and tables on the various indicators of quality used. For the first time, the data in the book are also available on computer medium. A diskette is provided, giving incidence (at the 3-digit level of ICD-9), mortality and population figures for each of the populations included in Volume VI. The software is simple and easy to use, with options displayed in windows and selected by using a given key. The options include facilities to compute standardized, cumulative or age-specific incidence rates using a subset of registries and sites; the results of which can be exported to an ASCII text file or represented as a pie or bar chart.

内容説明

The aim in presenting data on cancer occurrence in this series of publications was clearly set out in the introduction to the first volume, published in 1966 (Doll et al). The authors drew attention to the great rewards in understanding diseases aetiology to be derived from the study of disease frequency in different communities, in different areas, and over time. Mentioning the available sources of data for this type of study (mortality rates, and proportional frequencies of cancers from clinical or pathological series), they concluded that: 'the most valuable data are, undoubtedly, the rates obtained by recording the occurrence of every case of cancer over a specific period'. The seventh volume continues the pattern laid down at the start of this international collaborative project, to produce reliable and accurate data on cancer incidence which can be compared with confidence between populations from any part of the world. The data presented are collected. coded and analyzed in a standard manner and are included only after an objective assessment of quality. This latest volume appears as two separate publications, the traditional volume, presenting not only the data but also the text to help in the understanding and interpretation of the material and provide information on the individual registries, and a separate publication (CB2) in the new IARC CancerBase series - two diskettes containing the databases, a Windows -based software for its analysis (including graphic displays) and a users' guide. The efforts to build up cancer registration in areas of the world for which very little information on cancer occurrence is available are bearing fruit, and some of the results appear in this volume. There are data from new cancer registries in Africa, Asia (including, for the first time, data from Korea and Vietnam), and from South America (with Argentina and Uruguay appearing for the first time).

内容説明

This eighth volume in the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents series presents comprehensive data on cancer incidence for over 200 populations worldwide, for the period 1993-1997. For each population, age-specific, standardized and cumulative incidence rates are given by sex, for different types of cancer. The book follows the traditional format, with background chapters and descriptions of the areas and populations presented, as well as quality indicators. A CD-Rom presents detailed data on incidence by site, age and histological type. It contains the tabulated data as text files for further analysis using standard statistical packages (SAS, Stata, SPSS etc.).
