Parliament is at the centre of British political life. Designed as a guide for the student and the general reader, this text explains how it functions and how it has changed in the 1980s, with far-reaching consequences for British politics. The book examines the role, structure and day-to-day workings of both the Commons and the Lords. What real impact does Westminster, as opposed to Whitehall, have on the way the British people are governed? How effective are MPs and peers in the face of a determined government with a large majority? How is Parliament adapting to the growing power of the European Community and the rise of regional pressures at home?
