Some of Swinburne's most important poetry recreates the Arthurian legends from a `modern' perspective. Deeply influenced by Wagner and the German romantics, he reacted against the Tennysonian orthodoxy; `Tristram of Lyonesse' in particular is a sustained celebration of the triumph of love over conventional morality. This anthology makes available some of the most important poems in their complete form and will be essential to those interested in the Victorian era as well as to Arthurians and general readers.
