内容説明

This volume provides an account of music and musical life in 18th century Britain, with contributions by leading musicologists and musical historians. Setting the study of the century's music in a social and cultural context, the book combines musicological investigation with a clear sense of the place occupied by music in 18th century society. An introductory essay covers the background of socio-cultural history. The century is then divided roughly in two, and in each period (1700-1760, and 1760-1800) three discrete areas of music are examined: concert life, the theatre and music in the home. The contributors revalue the work of Greene, Arne, Boyce and Storace, and look in detail at the domination of London society enjoyed by Handel, J.C. Bach and Haydn. The role of women in music is discussed, as is the state of musical education. A final section looks at music in the church, and at musical literature.

内容説明

This is an account of music in Britain in the Romantic period from 1800 - 1914, with contributions by the leading musicologists and musical historians. It reflects a change of approach in traditional musicological investigation in its concern with music as something deeply rooted in the social and cultural life of its period. An introductory section analyzes the function of music in a rapidly changing society, with the rise of musical education and the expansion of music publishing. Then the field is divided into two broad categories. Firstly, Popular and Functional Music, including all those kinds of music that burgeoned in Victorian times, but have long been considered outside the realm of "serious" study - work songs, music hall, musical comedy, dance music, band music, hymn tunes and drawing room ballads. The second category, Art Music, offers fresh reappraisals of Bishop, Field, the Wesleys, Sterndale Bennett, Sullivan, Parry, Elgar and a host of lesser composers. The final section of the book contains chapters on the development of criticism, full range of music examples and a considerable bibliography.

内容説明

The music of the sixteenth century has been "rediscovered" regularly since its composition. It was an especially fertile period for English music in particular, and to put the century in a historical and musicological perspective, this volume spans the era from 1485 to 1625, although in order to provide context and perspective the contributors range back to the middle of the fifteenth century and towards the end on the seventeenth. The book opens with a history of music and musicians in Tudor England, covering composition and performance, as well as the changing functions of music over the period. Two chapters are dedicated to sacred and church music. They cover the last years of Pre-Reformation England (especially the music of Fayrfax, Ashwell, Taverner, and the organ music of Redford, Preston and Rhys), the composers who span the charge to Anglicanism (for example Sheppard and Tallis) and those (such as Tye, Byrd, Morley, Weelkes, Hooper and Gibbons) who helped lay the foundations for the rich heritage of Anglian church music that remains so vibrant a part of the church today. These chapters also consider the particular problems of those who continued to write Latin music after the Reformation (in particular Parsons, White and Byrd). The final three chapters of the book are devoted respectively to secular vocal music, to keyboard music, and to ensemble and lute music. These chapters include a detailed discusson of Tudor partsong, of the consort song, of English Madrigalists, the English Virginal School, the English lutenists and the rich variety of muic for ensemble. The book concludes with full bibliographies and with a comprehensive index.
