The book begins by describing the resources available to the researcher in record offices and libraries tracing the rise and decline of the country house from the 16th century to the present day. Aristocracy and landownership, the development of a house and its landscape, the exploitation of mineral wealth, the effects of the industrial revolution and life both above and below stairs are some of the topics covered. Each of the chapters highlights the source material most relevant to its theme whether it is wills, maps, surveys, bills, diaries or letters.
