An examination of mental handicap from a legal perspective, which covers the situation of the individual, of parents and of carers from the points of view of their rights and capacity, civil and criminal responsibility and other obligations. The role of the Health Authority is discussed, as well as the role of local authorities in terms of education and residential care. The financial implications of being mentally handicapped are explained by discussion of the funding of state benefits and the management of financial affairs. Appendices contain the names and addresses of useful organizations, a collection of precedents for making wills and settlements, and information on charitable trusts.
