This series from Pavilion highlights a unique approach to detailed garden design through an attractive combination of close-up photographs and informative text. Published as a set of pocket-sized books, this series is specially designed to lead the eye straight to the heart of the garden focussing on those individual details so important to the overall design of your garden. Garden gates may be practical, romantic or ornamental; they may serve to keep the world out or entice it in. whether they are made of metal or wood, solid or openwork, the siting, colour and surrounds of a gate are all crucial to the design. Rosemary Verey discusses all these aspects and urges us to look at gates wherever we go - from the grand wrought iron gates of a country estate to the charm of a small white wicket gate framed with roses - to analyse their success or failure, and to choose with discrimination. In doing so she provides much practical help. She also awakens our critical faculties: are they inviting; do they add dignity, strength and satisfaction; or do they give you an urge to remove them?
