Description
The nature of precursors is one of the classic problems of developmental research. This book examines how scientists have tried to find the causes of normal milestones in development and psychiatric disorders. The editors have invited major researchers in a number of areas of developmental psychology and psychiatry to reflect on the concepts of precursors and causes as they are used to describe and explain normal and abnormal development. The chapters explore precursors and causes of intelligence, theory of mind, empathy and co-operation, attachment and peer relationships, conduct disorder and intelligence. The conceptual issues are discussed from the perspectives of developmental psychology, medicine, genetics, neuroscience, statistical theory and philosophy of science.
