"20th Century Painters and Sculptors" encompasses not only the most complex but the most colourful period in the development of British Art. From the tidy subject groupings of the 19th century (genre scenes, child studies, historical, landscape etc.) the modern artist has explored the most abstract and intense expressions of his art. Schools of artists have worked together, movements have espoused artistic and social theories, wars have influenced subjects. Terms like Surrealism, Abstraction, Post-impressionism, Pop Art and the Modem Movement are in constant use but not always understood or their followers known. Frances Spalding provides an introduction to this complex period followed by an illustrated Dictionary which gives biographical and (where appropriate) stylistic information about the work and development of some 7,000 artists and sculptors, many of whom are still living.
