This book comprises topics from the area of psychiatry: memory/learning, brain plasticity, and schizophrenia. Although these subjects may not appear to be related, they were chosen based on the hypothesis that common factors may be involved, as suggested by experiments such as those on long-term potentiation and the reverse tolerance phenomenon. The first part of the book focuses on basic research on the biochemical aspects of memory, learning, and brain plasticity, especially on the involvement of neurotransmitters. The second part concerns reverse tolerance, abnormal brain plasticity, and memory disturbance. Finally, a general discussion aims to elucidate the common factors linking the 7 presentations and underline the complexities of psychiatric disease. This volume will be of great value to biological psychiatrists, neurochemists, neurological researchers, and those involved in the study of schizophrenia.
