The handbook is intended to provide an overview of the possibilities for the protection of technological innovations and of industrial designs available in the Federal Republic of Germany, with the instruments of the pertinent German laws for the protection of intellectual property.
In order to keep up with the rapid development and
diversification of technology, the German Patent and other Laws have undergone several amendments, reformulations and revisions in the past decades, in order
- to make the prosecution procedure more effective,
- to adapt it to new technologies like genetic engineering or computer sciences, and
- to harmonize it with the patent systems of other European states under the Strasbourg Harmonisation Agreement
