The management of gallstone disease has undergone fundamental change with the wide-spread adoption of laparoscopic cholechystectomy which is now the preferred method of treatment amongst the surgical community. Although few would doubt the benefits that the move towards laparoscopic procedures has brought, there is still considerable controversy about whether or not laparoscopic surgery is the only option to be considered when treating gallstones.
