These two volumes, part of a series, cover drugs, the sorts of crimes which drug use gives rise to, and the way in which the criminal justice system deals with those crimes. The social history of drug use is laid out and drugs as commodities with markets and outlets is also covered. Volume I deals with histories, epidemiology, theories and debates. It asks why our perception of drug use as a problem should be that it is worse than at the beginning of the 20th century. The debate between the legitimacy of a "war upon drugs" versus calls for the decriminalization of drug use is covered in detail. Volume II looks at drugs as commodities distributed within markets that form part of national and international illicit economies. The book points out that the responses of justice systems all over the world have been less than effective in controlling or stemming the range of crimes, from the minor to the major, that result from drug trafficking. The books offer clear coverage of the sorts of solutions and strategies that can be used in tackling the problems that arise from drug use and trafficking.
