This text covers the advances that have been made in the field of fluid, electrolyte and acid-base disorders in recent years. The new edition focuses more on the clinical level while still covering the basic sciences. New material has been added and some chapters have been consolidated, so that this edition has fewer chapters but more concise and clinically relevant material. More illustrations and tables have been included, along with many new contributors, including some from Europe and Japan. Topics covered include: sodium metabolism and maintenance of extracellular fluid volume; disorders of magnesium, sodium, potassium and calcium metabolism; chronic renal failure; metabolic diseases associated with gastrointestinal disease; and fluid and electrolyte metabolism in normal and abnormal pregnancy. New material added includes a separate chapter on the liver and a new chapter on the surgical patient, whilst the contents have been updated throughout.
