This volume constitutes a biography of two of the founding figures of literary modernism, whose tempestuous love for each other spanned half a century. Best known as the author of "Death of a Hero", Richard Aldington was a poet and translator as well as a biographer who alienated the British establishment with his acerbic "Lawrence of Arabia". H.D. (Hilda Doolittle) was born in America but lived in Europe after 1911. Her early verse established her reputation as a modernist writer at the forefront of experimental expression in both poetry and prose. Her work is often autobiographical and examines her own artistic and sexual relationships with both men and women. Drawing on Aldinton's and H.D.'s intimate correspondence between 1929 and 1961, Zilboorg explores their personal and professional lives, their friendships (particularly with Ezra Pound and D.H. Lawrence), and topics which concerned them both: cultural identity, sexuality and the role of literature in the modern world. This book should appeal both to scholars interested in 20th-century literary history and to the general reader.
