This book assesses critically Scotland's most important 20th century poet. Bringing together previously unpublished essays by prominent scholars, contemporary poets and friends of MacDiarmid, this book covers a wide range of his life and work, and draws on many critical perspectives. With critical analyses by established scholars such as Kenneth Buthlay, Alan Bold and Roderick Watson as well as by younger theorists, this book helps define MacDiarmid's position at the crux of modernism and postmodernism. Features of the book include recollections of the poet by Seamus Heaney, Sorley MacLean and Naomi Mitchison. It should be of interest to undergraduate students of English and Scottish literature, and general readers needing a critical and biographical introduction to MacDiarmid's work.
