The management of premalignant lesions uncovered by screening programmes is controversial in some cases and unproven in others. For each cancer site considered in this text, a surgeon collaborating with a pathologist, radiologist or other appropriate specialist provides an overview of the relevant epidemiology, histology, screening, presentation and treatment, emphasizing the need for clinical trials where appropriate.
