Automatatheoryisoneoftheoldestareasincomputerscience. Researchin automatatheoryhasbeenmotivatedbyitsapplicationssinceitsearlystagesof development. Inthe1960sand1970s,automataresearchwasmotivatedheavily byproblemsarisingfromcompilerconstruction,circuitdesign,stringmatching, etc. Inrecentyears,manynewapplicationsofautomatahavebeenfoundin variousareasofcomputerscienceaswellasinotherdisciplines. Examplesofthe newapplicationsincludestatechartsinobject-orientedmodeling,?nitetra- ducersinnaturallanguageprocessing,andnondeterministic? nite-statemodels incommunicationprotocols.
