The ICS series is proud to publish the proceedings of the 1st Symposium of the Japanese Society for Ultrastructural Cutaneous Biology, which will make a significant contribution to advances in the dermatological field.Dr. Friedrich Merkel first identified the Merkel cells, which he called Tastzellen (touch cells) in 1875. However, it was not until the 1960s that the existence of Merkel cells in the human skin was confirmed by Dr. Cauna using electron microscopy.1902 saw the discovery of the Haarscheiben (hair discs) by Dr. Felix Pinkus who reported that they are many Merkel cells beneath the epidermis of the disc. Today, the Merkel cell-neurite complex in the hair disc is regarded as a slow-adapting type I mechanoreceptor unit.Since 1978, when Drs.
