Description
Over much of the last 20 years, China's economy has grown at a tremendous rate and has shown substantial export prowess across a wide range of goods. In future years, China's influence on the development of world trade is likely to grow and become even more significant. Based generally on publicly available information, this book reviews the broad range of commitments and obligations assumed by China as part of its accession to the WTO, including such areas as tariff reductions, agriculture, subsidies, intellectual property, services, state-owned and state-invested enterprises, trading rights, transparency, and judicial review. The book also examines the extent of China's initial compliance with its WTO commitments and obligations, summarises issues of concern that have surfaced in the initial months of China's WTO membership, and looks at areas where it will be important to monitor China's compliance in the coming years. In addition, the book addresses how China's WTO accession may affect China's relations with the United States, both commercial relations and with respect to security interests.
