This work forms part of a trilogy by Niharranjan Ray on religion in Burma (the other two being "Sanskrit Buddhism in Burma" and "Brahamanical Gods of Burma"), and is a lucid description of the history and development of Theravada Buddhism in the region. It is a classic study of the history of Theravada Buddhism in Burma, based on ethnographic, archaeological and literary sources, particularly thorough examination of Pali and Sanskrit inscriptions.
