Description

This proceedings covers a wide range of topics to which advanced numerical methods can be applied to geotechnical engineering. The papers discuss applications of artificial neural networks for characterizing the stress-strain behavior of soil; present comparisons between discrete element modeling and laboratory data from shear box tests; examine numerical analyses of lateral earth support problems, including retaining walls, slurry walls, and a soil-nailed slope; provide methods for and results of advanced numerical modeling of footings on granular soils; and employ the spectral stochastic finite element method to analyze multi-phase flow in a random porous medium.
