福島県伊達市霊山町でかつて操業していた伊達永井鉱山の鉱石を用いて、地域の小学校高学年の児童を対象に、灰重石を分離する授業実践を行った。この実践は、児童が鉱石を破砕・粉砕し、鉱物を取り出し、希塩酸や紫外線ランプなどを用いて鉱物を同定するものである。実践の結果、児童は楽しみながら活動を行い、鉱石から灰重石を取り出すことができた。
