Abstract

Epidemiological studies on cancer preventive actions of dietary carotenoids and intervetion trials with β-carotene supplement are summarized and two major cell biological studies on ant-tumor actions of carotenoids are described in terms of carotenoid-induced induction of gap-junction and cell-cycle regulation by β-carotene. Our recent progress in carotenoid research is introduced in detail with special references to anti-promotor action against microcystin and suppressive action on epidermal growth factor receptor of β-carotene. Cancer preventive roles of carotenoids are discussed.
