Margarines (containing margarine-like foods) on the market in Portugal (11 brands), Belgium (22 brands), Netherlands (28 brands), United Kingdom (19 brands), United States (23 brands), and Japan (41 brands) were collected for determination of trans fatty acid composition.
1) Total trans fatty acid values in margarines samples were as follows. In Portugal and Belgium, all brands were less than 3%. In Netherlands, one brand contained more than 17%, and 27 others less than 3%. In the United Kingdom, the carton package ranged from 3 to 17%, the cup package from 1 to 18, and 8 out of 19 brands less than 3%. In Japan, the carton package (hard type) ranged from 15 to 28%, the cup package (soft type), of 5 out of 15 brands less than 3%, and the fat spread type ranged from 5 to 17% and averaged 12.2%.
2) Total trans fatty acids in cup and carton packaged margarines in the United Kingdom, United States and Japan were essentially the same between 1996 and 1990-1993 products.
3) Decrease in total trans fatty acid generally resulted in greater total saturated fatty acid. The sum of tarns fatty acids and saturated fatty acids in Gorton packages exceeded that in cap packages in all countries, and was basically the same for five countries.
