Abstract

Petroleum fuels are light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs), those are classified into gasoline, kerosene, diesel oil, heavy oil, and some other products by the range of boiling point. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out investigations of the soil and groundwater contamination by petroleum fuel considering those characteristics and distributional patterns in soil and groundwater.
In this paper, effective investigation techniques were examined to carry out preliminary investigations of soil and groundwater contamination by petroleum fuel. Then, the investigation technique of contaminated wells and the technique of soil gas investigation were devised. The investigation technique of contaminated wells consists of oil sampling using oil mat and the field analysis by the screening method using portable gas detector and portable GC method (by PID-GC). The technique of soil gas investigation consists of the screening method using portable gas detector and the method of gas sampling with GC analysis (distillation test by FID-GC).
It was verified by the results of field investigation that these cost-effective techniques were efficient to carry out the preliminary investigation.
