Abstract
The longitudinal vortex was artificially generated by single winglet vortex generator in a pipe. The longitudinal vortex does not decay until further downstream. The objective of this study is to examine the structure of the longitudinal vortex and the influence of vortex on heat transfer enhancement in a pipe. The smoke flow behaviors were measured by the video camera in order to obtain the information about changes of the flow motion downstream of vortex generator. The large main vortex, a couple of small corner vortices and the swirling flow with spiral motion of main vortex were observed until far downstream. Moreover, streamwise and circumferential shear stresses on the wall and local heat transfer were experimentally measured. The distributions of the shear stress and the local heat transfer well correspond to the structure of the longitudinal vortices in a pipe.
