Abstract
X-ray powder diffraction and Raman scattering studies on solid CF4 have been carried out under high pressure up to 12 GPa. The diffraction pattern of the phase III at 7. 5 GPa is assigned to a monoclinic lattice with lattice constants of a=6. 755, b=4. 401, c=6. 766 Å and β=103. 1 deg. For its space group, three different groups of P21, P21/m and P21/c agree with experimental results. The frequency-pressure dependences of intramolecular vibratinal modes suggest a phase transition at 8. 6 GPa.
