Abstract
Many regional discords arise against the construction of final disposal sites in Japan. One cause of the objection by the inhabitants results from a fear of environmental pollution from these final disposal sites. For a reliable prevention of environmental pollution, the Japanese law for solid waste treatment was revised. This paper presents an introduction of the revised Japanese standards of structure, maintenance and discontinuance for final disposal sites. In addition, it presents the authors opinions for the establishment of environmentally sound final-disposal-sites, with containing discus-sions of a concept for the final disposal of solid wastes and multiple-staged fail-safe structures for the prevention of groundwater pollution.
