Abstract

Advances in computer technology have not only spurred the collection of huge volumes of spatially-referenced data, but have also provided the means to store, manipulate, visualize and analyze the data. Geographical Information Systems(GIS) have the potential to bring about radical changes in the geological workplace. Instead of overlaying paper maps by hand on a light table, maps and images can be electronically combined.<BR>The purpose of this paper is to provide an example of a Uranium Resource Appraisal with the object of locating new unconformity related uranium deposits in southern Africa using the Geological Information Applying System for Uranium Resource Appraisal, "GIASURA", developed in-house by PNC and including a degitized 1/5, 000, 000 International Geological Map of Africa and mineral occurrences. We attempted to delineate favourable geological terraines for new unconformity related uranium deposits incoraporating the GIS on the basis of some analogue deposits in Canada and Australia. Furthermorem, PNC attempted to use GIS and GPS for mineral geological mapping incorporating Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery, airphotography and geological survey data in selected geological terraines. Using geologic control factors and the size of mireral deposits, we selected several favourable areas for the purpose of ground checking during later exploration.<BR>This procedure is not only far more efficient for examining spatial associations between various geological and geophysical data sets, but also allows more exhaustive and creative use to made of expensively-collected data.
