Asymmetric induction anionic polymerization of N-maleoyl-L-phenylalanine cyclohexyl ester (CHPAM) was performed at 0°C and the relationship between structures and chiroptical properties of the polymers was clarified. In the polymerization in a mixture of tetrahydrofuran and toluene, absolute values of specific rotation of the obtained polymers decreased with an increase of toluene contents in the mixture solvent. Asymmetric induction in the polymer main chain took place in the polymerization more often in toluene than in tetrahydrofuran as confirmed by 13C NMR, CD spectra, and the specific rotation of the polymers. The asymmetric induction was considered to be attributed to threo-diisotactic structure of the main chain having a positive optical rotation. Asymmetric induction copolymerization of CHPAM was carried out with methyl methacrylate or triphenylmethyl methacrylate (TrMA) in the presence or absence of (-) -sparteine (Sp) as an optically active ligand. Poly (CHPAM-co-TrMA) obtained with n-butyllithium/ (-) -Sp showed characteristic chiroptical properties due to helical structure of the TrMA comonomer units.
