(p-Isopropenylphenethyl) poly (α-methylstyrene) macromonomer (PSM) was reacted with potassium mirror at room temperature under high vacuum to yield three macroinitiators (K+- (PSM) n-K+, n=1, 2, 4), though difficult to isolate. Isoprene (Is) was anionically polymerized by the three macroinitiators to produce the corresponding three-arms, four-arms, and six-arms star-block copolymers ((PSM) n-s- (PIs) 2, n= 1, 2, 4). A main product of the three copolymers was (PSM) 1-s- (PIs) 2, having a conversion rate more than 75%. Each star-block copolymer of the three (PSM) n-s- (PIs) 2 has narrow distributions of the PIs constituent and molecular weight, and has a newly produced PIs chain having the same molecular weight as those of the other two copolymers. Three samples, SSI-1 (PIs content of 33%), SSI-2 (56%), and SSI-3 (85%), showed the same molecular characteristics mentioned above. Molecular weights of the PIs chains of the three samples increased with the amount of Is monomer used in the polymerization. These results suggest that Is monomer was polymerized by the macroinitiators of K+- (PSM) n-K+ via the anionic living mechanism.
