Abstract

1) It has been known that the distribution of the two types of the evergreen forest in East Asia, the Machilus type forest and the Shiia type forest is controlled by topographical factors of their growing grounds. The author, however, has found that the time factor is also important for the relation between the two types, that is, the former developes into the latter on the alluvial plain. 2) The acrage of rice-field has been kept expanding toward sea-side around the down streams of Toyo-gawa and Kiso-gawa, both not far from Nagoya, Central Japan through continuous reclamation work of waste land. We have some forests ; each with a Shinto Shrine in center, elevated a little amongst these fields. Literatures on colonization of these districts tell us preciesly that these forests played as stands for the development of the types mentioned above. 3) Shiia type forests, including Machilus are found in stands 500〜800 years old. Machilus type forests, including Pinus are found in stands 300〜500 years old. The forests of Pinus Thunbergii, with Machilus Thunbergii as undergrowth are found in stands 60〜300 years old. Therefore, the author concludes the Machlius type developes into the Shiia. 4) Shrubs and herbs in forests of each stand are as follows : - The followings are found only in stands over 300 years old : Aucuba japonica, Ardisia japoinca, Polygonum filiforme, Damnacanthus indicus, Ardisia crispa, Reineckia carnea, Kadsura japonica.
