Plastic Anisotropy in an Al-Cu-Co Decagonal Quasicrystal

Compression experiments have been performed for single-grained Al–Cu–Co decagonal quasicrystals with different orientations of the compression axes: the tenfold direction (<I>c</I><SUB>⁄⁄</SUB>), a direction perpendicular to it (<I>c</I><SUB>⊥</SUB>) and a direction inclined from <I>c</I><SUB>⁄⁄</SUB> by about 45° (<I>c</I><SUB>45°</SUB>). A large plastic anisotropy has been found; the yield stress for <I>c</I><SUB>⁄⁄</SUB> compression is much larger than those for the other two orientations. Clear slip lines have been observed perpendicularly to the tenfold axis on the surface of the <I>c</I><SUB>45°</SUB> compressed samples. Using a conventional procedure, the activation volume and the activation enthalpy of plastic deformation have been deduced from the data on <I>c</I><SUB>45°</SUB> compression. The activation enthalpy obtained is unusually large, similarly to those for icosahedral quasicrystals previously reported.
