Abstract

Systematic hot extrusion studies have been carried out to investigate the deformation characteristics of 2124 Al–SiCp Stir Cast Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs). Important extrusion parameters such as die design, ram speed, reheat temperature and extrusion ratio (ER) were correlated with the mechanical properties of extruded MMCs. It is noticed the mechanical properties of these extruded MMC are strongly dependent on extrusion processing parameters. Selected micrographs have been shown to highlight some typical extrusion features of these MMCs. Systematic correlation of extrusion process parameters with mechanical and microstructural details, led to conclude that using optimized process parameters, good quality extruded rods of MMCs can be produced.
