The Pleistocene marine deposit named Shimogama shell-bed is exposed along a seacliff of the northern coast of the Tachibana Bay, at Shimogama, Enoura-mura, Kita-Takaki-gun, Nagasaki Prefecture, Kyushu. The Shimogama shell-bed overlies unconformably the hornblende-andesite and is overlain conformably with terrace deposits consisting of mainly cobbly gravels. The fossils found in the shell-bed are listed in Table 1 and 2. The molluscan fauna comprise 32 species of Pelecypoda, 1 of Scaphopoda and 17 of Gastropoda, amounting to 50 species in total and all of the fauna are living species. From the characters of the molluscan assemblage, it is suggested that the Shimogama fauna may have flourished in an mud-bottomed embayment, not far from land and in shallow sea (euneritic and partly tidal facias). The Shimogama shell-bed may be correlated with Chugenbaru, Tokumaru and Tsukabara formations which are belonging to the late Pleistocene in age.
